I just bought a laptop that is running Windows Vista. I wanted to print to my HP LaserJet 4L connected to my desktop running Windows XP. Problem: I kept getting an Access Denied error. Keep reading to find out how I was able to work around this.

I ended up finding several tutorials that had different approaches and by combining these, I figured out how to do this.

Steps:

  1. On Vista: open up Control Panel -> Printers
  2. Click Add a printer
  3. Click Add a local printer
  4. Select Create a new port - Type Local port
  5. Clicking Next will prompt you to enter a name - use the network path to the printer on your network.
For instance, I used \\desktopXP\HPLJ4L (my computer name is desktopXP and my printer is shared as HPLJ4L)
  6. Click Next and select the driver from the list
  7. Click Next and customize the name or use the default - it’s up to you
  8. Click Next to install the printer
  9. You may print a test page to test the connection.
  10. Click finish to be done.

I just bought gateway laptop and wanted to hook my samsung ML-1010 laser printer with it. Everything worked like a char. thank for the little tutorial Tim.

Dell’s free support just referred me to their paid support number. Later I found this solution on several other websites, but this description was clear and accurate. My shared printer is working perfectly.

Thank you for the tip.
HP “total care” wouldn’t help me on this issue with a brand new laptop without a charge!
The solution was well described and simple to follow.
Thanks for posting
