It was over at the field's edge
Where field and forest pledged
Forevermore their love
And to each other to be true
Forest, made of massive timber and oak
And field with delicate furrows plowed
They stared at each other, cowed
And for love, neither spoke
Finally his hesitant words of love
Spoken with the breath of wind
Sighing through his bows of wood
Spoken, her broken heart to mend
But still, she spoke not, she had no voice
Although she knew, had made her choice
He was perfect for her in every way
Matched her rough edges and stood up straight
But she had no legs, no feet, no arms
All she had were little dirt-clod charms
But forest seeing below the surface
Down below where only words hurt us
Saw her heart made of pure whitest gold
It made him sigh, it made him weep
Darling, we're made for each other
He'd say several times a week
Still she did not speak, she was too shy
Thought she wasn't tall enough to reach his sky
Still he waited patiently for her to speak
Knew it would come, knew her need
Years passed with Forest sighing his love to field
Gradually her layers eroded, away they were peeled
She started to look up, she started to feel
A small reply growing within her furrowed breast
It grew there like a seed dying to live
'Til she couldn't hold it in, had to give
Up it burst one day, it was already growing
And Forest's tears like rain started flowing
...
The day was set, they were to be wed
The vows were written, ready to be said
Then it was time and they both spoke
And their voices like promises, never broke
Still they're together, side by side
Untold years have passed them by
Still in love, still holding hands
Still wearing their golden wedding bands
