Shadow

There they were
In a stable
Such a beautiful mess
Fact, no fable
I'm comin' too
I'm a sinner
And must confess

And the angels sang
And the shepherds quaked

Can a King be born
In a stable
A birth so humble
Fact, no fable
A life intended to be
Given up, given for all
For our sins, for our stumble

And the star came to stand
Over where the child was

And the eastern kings
With their gifts
And no expense spared
No five-and-dime thrifts
Those joyful kings
Came to worship
The only one who cared

And we who once were far away
Are now called friends

Can a King live
In a stable
That tiny child King
Fact, no fable
Angles sang, shepherds came
And Jesus, growing up
In the shadow of that tree

Will I, like Herod, try to stay on the throne
Or will I humbly bend and kneel before the One?
